A Citizens’ Assembly for a greener city with more access for everyone

Be part of the effort to achieve the City’s environment and climate goals by 2030

The theme for the City of Gothenburg Citizens’ Assembly is ways to create a greener and more accessible city for everyone.

Gothenburg is growing, which means that there are more people sharing its streets and squares. Many needs have to coexist within those spaces: daily life and social venues, greenery, trade, service and different ways of travelling. We are also faced with the challenge of making the City ecologically sustainable and climate-neutral by 2030. If we’re going to succeed, we need to start the transition now.

The City of Gothenburg has high ambitions on climate and environment issues. Read here about the City’s Environment and Climate Programme 2021-2030:   Göteborgs Stads miljö- och klimatprogram 2021-2030 (External link, in Swedish)

Aim

The Citizens’ Assembly will be held in the autumn of 2025 and spring of 2026. A representative group of local residents will work together to make recommendations to the politicians to support achieving the City’s environment and climate goals by 2030.

The Citizen’s Assembly, and the development of the process of it, was initiated by the City Council.

Organisation

50 people will meet on four Saturdays.

The Citizens’ Assembly will meet on the following dates and times:

Saturday, 21 February
Saturday, 14 March
Saturday, 18 April
Saturday, 9 May

All meetings take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Each meeting lasts 7 hours.

The first two meetings will provide opportunities for the members to get to know each other.  They will also get a chance to get the background knowledge they need to develop their recommendations.

During the second meeting the Assembly members will begin looking at recommendations they would like to work with and develop together.

Politicians from the Urban Environment Committee will be present at the first and last meetings, to officially open the Assembly in the beginning and to receive the recommendations at the last meeting.

External observers will also be present, to monitor how the process and discussions proceed.

Composition

A total of 12,000 people between the ages of 16 and 90, from all parts of Gothenburg, will be invited to the Citizens’ Assembly. All of those invited can register their interest in participating as Assembly members in a form where they will be asked to provide information about their age, sex, level of education and income level, among other things. A random, but representative selection will be drawn from those who have registered interest and 50 individuals will be selected to become members of the Citizens’ Assembly. The final make up of the Assembly is intended to be a reflection of the community of Gothenburg as a whole. The aim is to also include resident groups who rarely engage in other activities organised by the City of Gothenburg.
